Terrill Messer and wife Donna with son Mark during his cancer treatment

Terrill Messer and his late wife, Donna, most definitely found a source of strength and hope through grief. Having lost two of their three sons to glioblastoma, an aggressive form of brain cancer, the Messers wanted to do whatever they could to fight against this terrible disease.

“Mark and John both lost their battles to cancer at age 49,” Terrill says, “when they were much too young and had so much more to accomplish and give to this world.”

Mark was treated at Geisinger, where Terrill saw Mark’s team of caregivers—surgeons, chemotherapy and rehab staff, and others—striving to give his son the best possible outcomes. “They extended his life by a good four years, which is remarkable with this diagnosis.”

The Messers wanted to fund brain cancer research, so they made a planned gift to Geisinger in an interesting way: Naming Geisinger as a beneficiary of a life insurance policy. This unconventional but incredibly meaningful gift ensures the impact of their contribution can be felt for years to come.

“We need a cure, and my wife and I wanted to be a part of one. This is just one way we can honor Mark and John’s memories.”
